Apples

 

 

We grow over 35 varieties of apples on our farms. Here are a few of the more popular, better known varieties.

Cortland

It is an apple with a hint of tartness, yet is sweet compared to McIntosh. It is a nice red color with a greenish yellow background. The flesh inside is snow white. It is excellant for eating and for salads, pies or sauce.

First developed in 1898 as a cross between Ben Davis and McIntosh.

Available from October to June.

 



Crispin

 

It is typically greenish on the outside with a creamy white, firm textured, juicy flesh. It has a modertly sweet flavour and is excellant for eating, sauce and baking. Bite into a Crispin for a great crunch and mouthfull of sweet juice.

The Crispin was first developed in 1930 as a cross between Golden Delicious and the Japanese variety Indo. Originally named MUTSU, it was renamed Crispin in 1968 in the United Kingdom. The name was adopted by North America several years later.

Available from November to June.

 



Empire

 

The Empire is a very red and firm apple that is excellant for eating as well as baking and apple sauce. It has a mild, tart flavour that improves in storage. Small Empire are great for lunches, as kids love it's sweet, super crunchy texture.

Cross between McIntosh and Red Delicious first introduced in 1966.

Available from October to June.

 



Macoun

Macoun is a small to medium sized, red apple with crisp, juicy, snow white flesh. Excellent for eating. This apple is one of our best kept secrets.

First introduced in 1932.

Get them early while they last because they are only available from mid October to late November.

 



Golden Delicious

 

This apple is truly an all purpose apple. Because of it's natural sweetness it is sometimes preferred by cooks who want to use less sugar in their recipes. It is an excellent apple for eating and ideal for baking and salads. Golden Delicious is the second most popular apple in the world.

First intorduced in 1914, Golden Delicious is a cross between Golden Reinette and Grimes Golden.

Available from late October to June.



Gravenstein


Gravenstein is the cooking apple of choice in Nova Scotia kitchens. The fruit is roundish with a thin skin that is greenish-yellow to orange-yellow with light and dark red stripes. The flesh is firm, crisp, aromatic and juicy

It was originally found in the Duke of Austinburg’s garden in Grafenstein, North Germany in 1699. .

Apples are harvested in early September and available until mid November.

 

 



Honeycrisp

 

Large size fruit with distinctive, sweet, juicy, explosively crisp texture. Flesh is cream coloured. Excellent eating apple and great for baking, sauces and pies.

The Honeycrisp was first introduced in 1960 as a cross between Macoun and Honeygold.

Because availability is limited, get them early starting in late October.

 



Idared

 

Medium to large apple with crisp, firm, hard flesh that is tangy and juicy . Great for eating and excellent for baking.

Cross between Jonathan and Wagener.

Available late winter to early summer.

 

 



Jonagold

 

Large round shape with a red blush. Sweet, juicy apple with a creamy coloured flesh. Great for eating fresh and cooking.

Cross between Golden Delicious and Jonathan first introduced in 1968..

Available October to June.

 



McIntosh

A medium size, irregular round apple. Color is red with a green splash. Juicy, white flesh that is mildly tart but sweetens as it ripens. Excellent for eating fresh, baking pies, and sauces.

 

McIntosh originated in 1811 as a chance seedling by John McIntosh of Dundela, Ontario.

Available late September to June.



Paulared

A firm, crisp and juicy bright red apple that is wonderful for eating and cooking. A perfect apple for back-to-school lunches.

First introduced in 1960.

Available late August to late October.

 

 



Red Delicious

 

Apple is medium to large size, firm, sweet, and juicy with a crunchy texture. Dark red or striped with long, tapered shape and distinctive five points. Excellent in salads. Excellent eating apple, but not recommended for cooking. Red Delicious is the most popular apple variety in the world.

First discovered as a chance seedling in 1893.

Available October to June.

 




Russet

 

A European favourite since the early 1800’s. Great for snacks, pie filling, and apple sauce.


Available form November to spring.



 

 

Spartan

Medium size, red variety has firm, crisp texture. Excellent fresh eating and great in pies and sauces.

Spartan is a cross between McIntosh and Newtown Pippin. First introduced in 1936.

Available October to spring.



Splendor

 

 

Apple is medium to large size, firm, sweet, and juicy. Colour is a reddish orange. Excellent for pies and sauces.


Available from December to June.
